Bangladesh celebrates cricket victory

Sheikh Hasina Dhaka, March 15 (IANS) A cricket World Cup win has sent Bangladesh into a celebratory mood, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sending sweets even to opposition leader Khaleda Zia.

Hasina said her gesture to Zia was “a gesture of sharing joy” after Bangladesh defeated the Netherlands by six wickets, New Age said Tuesday.

Khaleda’s private secretary Saleh Ahmed received the sweets. The two women leaders are barely on talking terms.

The cricket victory coincided with the release of Bangladeshi ship MV Jahan Moni along with its crew, all Bangladeshis, by Somali pirates. They were released after weeks of captivity.

The celebration comes amid the Zia-led opposition’s decision to end their boycott of parliament.

“We’ve decided to join the house considering the overall situation of the country,” opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque said.

The opposition members would have lost their membership of the house had they persisted with the boycott for 90 days.
