January 5th, 2011 - 3:39 pm ICT by IANSThirivananthapuram, Jan 5 (IANS) Former chief justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan’s son-in-law P.V. Srinijin Wednesday quit the Youth Congress for allegedly acquiring huge wealth, as a court accepted a petition against Balakrishnan’s kin over alleged financial irregularities. The Youth Congress had earlier announced it would probe how Srinijin, a lawyer by profession, became so wealthy.
“He has sent his resignation and it has been accepted,” Youth Congress president P.C. Vishnunadh told reporters here. Srinijin was a Congress candidate in the 2006 assembly polls but he lost.
Meanwhile, the Thrissur Vigilance Court accepted a petition against Srinijin and K.G. Bhaskaran, Balakrishnan’s brother.
Petitioner George Vattukalam filed a detailed complaint citing the revenue records of the various properties acquired by close relatives of Balakrishnan.
The next hearing is scheduled for Jan 18.
Balakrishnan’s family has come under spotlight since former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer demanded Dec 27 an investigation into how Srinijin could acquire immense wealth in just three years.
Iyer has urged Balakrishnan to explain the issue.
Meanwhile, the Kerala government’s home department has launched proceedings for a vigilance probe against Srinijin after getting a letter from Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan.
Bhaskaran, a special government pleader, went on leave Monday.
