Bangalore, Sep 19 (IANS) Mahendra Kumar, president of the Karnataka unit of the Bajrang Dal, Friday said his group was not involved in attacks on churches in the state but his was “ready for arrest or any sacrifice in defence of Hindu religion”.”There is no basis for my arrest. We are not involved in the attacks but we are always with the people who work to defend attacks on Hindu religion,” Kumar told IANS, reacting to opposition parties’ demand for his detention.

He denied saying that the Bajrang Dal was behind Sunday’s attacks in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and coffee-rich Chikmagalur.

“I had only said that it is the people who were against conversion and acts insulting Hindu religion who took part in the attacks and we are with them,” Kumar said.

“My arrest will be against all democratic principles. But I am ready for it and any sacrifice in defence of Hindu religion. Our organisation will continue to work for the cause of our religion,” he maintained.

Asked if his organisation has any data on the number of people converting to Christianity, Kumar said: “In the last eight years more than 4,000 families have been converted in the state.

“There are more than 60 cases registered with the police in Karnataka in this regard but no action has been taken,” he said.

A police spokesperson said: “If we have registered the cases, then investigation will be on. We can, and will, take action if a prima facie case is established.”
