Hyderabad, May 28 (IANS) A minister in Andhra Pradesh manhandled a Rajya Sabha MP of the Communist Party of India-Marxist amid clashes between Congress and CPI-M workers on the eve of by-elections here. Minister for Backward Classes Welfare Mukesh Goud pushed Rajya Sabha member Penumalli Madhu when the MP was protesting over the alleged distribution of money by the ruling Congress party among voters in the Musheerabad assembly constituency in this state capital.

About a dozen people were injured in the clashes between the Congress and CPI-M and the caning by police, leading to tension in Chikkadpally neighbourhood and surrounding areas.

Trouble began in the evening when CPI-M workers caught Congress activists allegedly distributing money among a section of voters. Soon leaders of both parties gathered leading to heated arguments between them.

Goud, along with Secunderabad MP Anjan Kumar Yadav and Greater Hyderabad Congress president D. Nagender, reached there and threatened Madhu before pushing him. Congress activists also beat up the CPI-M leaders and workers and attacked Madhu’s vehicle.

Police used force when Madhu and others staged a sit-in demanding Goud’s arrest. Leaders of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also rushed there and demanded action against the minister.

Madhu said police personnel were mute spectators to the Congress leaders’ attack on him and others of CPI-M. He demanded that the minister be expelled from the cabinet.

Musheerabad is one of the 18 assembly constituencies going to by-elections Thursday along with four Lok Sabha seats. It is one of the two constituencies from where CPI-M, an electoral ally of TDP, has fielded its candidate.
