Andhra legislator booked for rape, murder of nursing student
June 19th, 2009 - 2:33 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, June 19 (IANS) A Telugu Desam Party (TDP) legislator has been booked for allegedly raping and murdering a student of an Andhra Pradesh nursing college run by him. But T.V. Rama Rao has termed it a conspiracy by his rivals.
Police said Friday that tension prevailed in Nidadavolu town in West Godavari district as the legislator from Kovvur assembly constituency was Thursday night booked for the alleged rape and murder of a student of TVR College.
“We have registered a case under sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Venkatrami Reddy told IANS.
Mystery shrouds the whole incident as the police are yet to find evidence of murder and the legislator blames his rivals, including a local journalist, for framing him.
The identity of the victim is also not known as neither any family member nor any other student has come forward to lodge a complaint.
The case of rape and murder was registered following a complaint by David Raju, the leader of a Dalit outfit, who alleged that the legislator disposed of the body of the student.
However, all that the police found in the college premises was a palm print.
“We don’t know if it is blood or not. The experts will look into it,” Reddy said.
District Superintendent of Police Balakrishna visited the college premises Friday. He denied that the legislator had been arrested. He also spoke to a few students but they said they did not know anything.
Allegations of rape and murder were made against the legislator when he was present in the college premises Thursday evening. As the word spread, a large number of people gathered there and some of them pelted stones at the building.
The legislator alleged that it was a conspiracy by his rivals to defame him and his institution.
“I will commit suicide if these allegations are proved,” he told reporters.
He also alleged that a local official and a journalist were trying to implicate him. He accused the journalist of blackmailing him.
Amid high drama, the police whisked away the legislator late Thursday after he had climbed on the water tank atop the college building.
