Chandigarh, Oct 30 (IANS) The Punjab government Friday ordered the transfer of Amritsar’s senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kanwar Vijay Pratap Singh following his ongoing spat with a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker.
Singh, who is known to be upright, has been moved as Commandant of the 82nd battalion of the Punjab Armed Police in Chandigarh.
He and BJP’s Amritsar-north legislator Anil Joshi were at loggerheads for the last couple of months after the police registered cases against some supporters of the legislator.
Joshi openly came out against Singh and sought his transfer. He even started a protest fast against the SSP. He threatened to go on fast unto death if the police chief was not changed.
Following pressure from the Punjab BJP leaders, the Punjab government Friday transferred Singh.
The BJP and Akali Dal run an alliance government in the state.
Being a border district adjoining Pakistan and also the centre of Sikh religious and political activities, Amritsar is considered a sensitive and important posting for senior police officers.
