Amit Shah seeks Supreme Court approval to stay in Gujarat
January 24th, 2012 - 5:36 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Jan 24 (IANS) Former Gujarat minister Amit Shah Tuesday moved the Supreme Court, seeking permission to “enter, stay and function” in the state in which he has been barred entry since Oct 30, 2010 in the wake of an apex court order.
Shah sought modification of the order which, while declining to suspend the bail granted by the Gujarat High Court, directed him to stay away from the territorial limits of the state.
He said it was causing a serious prejudice and unwarranted hardship to him as he was out of the state for 16 months because of which his constituency, Sarkhej in Ahmedabad, from where he was elected to the state assembly for four consecutive terms remains unrepresented.
“A person who is politically active in a democratic public life cannot remain away from his constituency, electorate, voters and workers,” Shah said in his petition.
He was added as an accused in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake shootout case in which the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) described him as a head of extortion syndicate in Gujarat.
