Mamata Banerjee New Delhi, May 13 (IANS) The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Friday welcomed the victory of Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and said it was special as its secretary general Amit Mitra had won and it looked forward to associate itself with the new government to develop the state.

Mitra, who has for years lobbied for expediting reforms and defended the cause of corporate India, is now expected to head West Bengal’s finance ministry and handle its business environment in a manner not seen in the past 34 years of Communist rule.

Mitra was associated with FICCI since 1994, while he joined the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress in March. He contested assembly elections from Khardaha constituency in North 24 Parganas, defeating the incumbent Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta by 26,154 votes.

According to the industry lobby, West Bengal has lost its pre-eminent position in the industrial hierarchy of the nation over the last few decades and it is looking forward to associate itself with the new government’s efforts to develop the state and to attract investment.

“FICCI would be keen to pursue development programmes with the state government and have already scheduled their next executive committee meeting in Kolkata at the beginning of July to take the agenda forward,” said Rajiv Kumar, director general, FICCI.

FICCI believes that West Bengal, with its rich human resources and its unique location, has immense possibilities to emerge as one of the leading centres for business and industry in the country as well as India’s gateway to East Asia.

The industry lobby had earlier presented blueprints for industrial development and rejuvenation of West Bengal.
