Amartya Sen welcomes anti-graft movement
July 4th, 2011 - 8:03 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 4 (IANS) With the anti-corruption campaign gaining momentum across the country, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen Monday welcomed the movement, calling it a result of the social commitment to eradicate the menace.
“The level of corruption is the same, there has been no dramatic increase in that. But what has happened is greater commitment on the part of society to curb corruption, I welcome it,” Sen said on the sidelines of a function here.
He, however, wished that the level of activism seen in movements by Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev is also seen in areas like education, health and discrimination against women.
Amartya Sen, who won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998, was speaking after he was conferred an honorary Doctor of Literature degree by the National University of Educational Planning and Administration.
The degree was conferred on Sen by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal.
