Alvin Greene Urged To Quit SC Senate Race Due To Felony Charges!
June 10th, 2010 - 9:35 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonJune 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Within hours of Alvin Greene’s victorious nomination to run for the US Senate seat, which was given to him by the Democrats of South Carolina, the party chairman called on the Senate Primary winner to back out of the race, after it was discovered that he faces a felony obscenity charge.
He put up no political websites, raised no money, used his own funds, and this unemployed Army veteran beat out his well known opponent, Vic Rawl, by a whopping 59%. The win sent shock throughout the Democratic Establishment of South Carolina. Vic Rawl, on the other hand, had raised large amounts of cash for his campaign, and had many fundraisers planned for the fall elections.
The obscenity charge comes from an episode which occurred at the University of South Carolina, in which Greene allegedly showed pornographic material to a sophomore, before telling her to go back to her room with him. The description of the events as posted by the ‘Associated Press’ are as follows:
“I said, ‘That’s offensive,’ and he sat there laughing,” said Camille McCoy, a rising sophomore who said Greene sat down next to her in a computer lab and asked her to look at pornographic photos on his screen. “He said, ‘Let’s go to your room now.’ It was kind of scary. He’s a pretty big boy. He could’ve overpowered me.”
McCoy called campus police and picked Greene out of a photo array. If convicted, Greene could face 5 years in prison, however, he has not yet been indicted nor entered a plea.
Alvin Greene, however, said that he is not stepping aside. “The Democratic Party has chosen their nominee, and we have to stand behind their choice,” he said. “The people have spoken. We need to be pro-South Carolina, not anti-Greene.”
