New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) The public spat between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party over the terror attacks intensified Monday with the ruling party coming down heavily on the main opposition for levelling allegation against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said the party “totally rejects the outrageous and scandalous allegations levelled against the prime minister.”

She was reacting to BJP leader Arun Jaitley’s attack on prime minister, saying “his bona fides in the war against terror were suspect.” His reaction came a day after the PM’s advocacy of a federal crime agency to fight the trans-national menace.

Natarajan said : “This is exactly the kind of charge and allegations which will please those disruptive elements across the border and elsewhere, which are attempting to destroy the peace, harmony and economic progress of India.”

She reminded BJP that the Congress had extended unconditional support to the NDA government when there was terror attack during the latter’s regime.

“Tragically, the BJP has not only miserably failed to play the role of a constructive opposition, but is now actively hindering the fight against terror by making false, baseless and scandalous allegations against the prime minister,” she said.

She said the BJP has completely abdicated its responsibility as the principal opposition party and “has taken recourse to the lowest and most dangerous divisive tactics by questioning the bona fides of the prime minister.”

About targeting Bangaldeshi nationals in Jaipur following the bomb blast that killed 61 and injured over 200, Natarajan said: “It will further aggravate the communal situation.”
