Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski Concedes Defeat To Joe Miller

September 1, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Lisa Murkowski, the US Senator conceded her seat to Joe Miller a Fairbanks lawyer on Tuesday. Murkowski had held on to the chair for eight years after her father had passed it on to her.
The officials concerned with the elections counted 13,000 absentees and checked the early results which showed Murkowski making practically no headway against Miller. The senior senator from Alaska called up Joe Miler later and conceded. The results are being described as the one of the most shocking upsets of 2010.
Murkowski sounded surprisingly cheerful at the press conference held on Tuesday where she announced her concession. She said that it had been a terrible week and she could not really see the primary results going her way.
The entire political circle outside Alaska watched the Murkowski-Miller battle with interest. Larry Sabato, a political analyst said that it was a nightmarish situation for any incumbent. They usually think they are ahead in the race but the results speak of a different story altogether on election night.
Senator Clem Tillion, a Republican from Halibut Cove stated that it was a shame to lose such seniority. Now they are left with only two fresh candidates there and no seniority at all. It is akin to being naked, he elaborated.
The counting of ballots showed Murkowski trailing Miller by 1,496 votes at 5 PM on the day. She then garnered a few more votes from Anchorage which was expected but did not come close to covering the distance with Miller continuing to be strong in Valley and Fairbanks. Steve Wackowski, the spokesman for Murkowski said that they calculated and found that there could be no use in continuing to draw out for an indefinite period of time.
Lisa Murkowski now becomes the third candidate in the USA of not having made it beyond the primary in a re-election bid. Arlen Specter and Robert F. Bennett from Pennsylvania and Utah respectively were the other two Senators who had to concede defeat.
Miller will now have to face the Democratic candidate Scott McAdams, a commercial fisherman by profession and currently the mayor of Sitka. The general elections are slated to be held on 2nd November.
