Pratibha Patil Chandigarh, June 16 (IANS) Leaders and activists of Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal Thursday staged sit-in protests in all districts of Punjab to protest against the prevailing corruption under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

In Bathinda town, the protest was led by Deputy Chief Minister and Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal.

He also submitted a memorandum, addressed to President Pratibha Patil, to the Bathinda deputy commissioner. The memorandum appealed Patil to direct the central government to bring back the black money from foreign banks and to register cases against the corrupt leaders.

“We want the government to make the names of corrupt politicians public and to book them under various sections of the anti-corruption act. This protest is just the wake up call for UPA government and they should take it very seriously,” said Badal.

“We demand an independent inquiry in all the scandals and scams that have come to light during the past few years,” he added.

Scores of party workers took part in protests in various districts like Jalandhar, Amritsar, Bathinda, Mohali, Patiala, Ludhiana and Ferozepur.

Akali Dal has launched this anti-corruption campaign just few months before state assembly elections, slated to be held in February 2012.
