Akali Dal-BJP leading in Punjab after first round (Second Lead)

Bharatiya Janata Party Chandigarh, March 6 (IANS) Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine surged ahead of the Congress in early trends emerging after the first round of counting on nearly 70 of the state’s 117 assembly seats.

The ruling alliance was leading in nearly 40 seats while the Congress led on 25 seats. On the remaining seats, others, including independents, were leading.

Earlier, the Congress had made gains in the early trends of vote counting.

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh (Patiala-urban) and Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal (Jalalabad) were leading on their respective seats.

Amarinder’s son Raninder Singh (Congress) was trailing on the Samana seat.

Counting of votes started in Punjab at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
