AIADMK candidates list out, Jayalalithaa to contest Srirangam
March 17th, 2011 - 12:16 am ICT by IANSChennai, March 16 (IANS) The AIADMK Wednesday announced 160 candidates for the Tamil Nadu assembly polls and the constituencies from where they will contest in the April 23 elections. Party general secretary J. Jayalalithaa will contest from Srirangam constituency.
The Srirangam assembly constituency falls under the Tiruchirapalli Lok Sabha constituency, which is currently held by the AIADMK.
In 2006, Jayalalithaa had contested successfully from Andipatti.
According to party officials, a sizeable number of sitting legislators has been given the ticket for the polls. The party will be contesting in about 15 constituencies in Chennai, once considered the DMK’s fort. There are 234 seats in the state.
Former AIADMK minister B. Valarmathy has been allotted the Thousand Lights constituency, currently held by Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Jayalalithaa will start her election campaign tour from Madurai Friday. She will be back here April 1, and start out to campaign in the Coimbatore belt April 3.
She will return here April 8 to canvass for her party in the state capital.
AIADMK has reached an agreement for 74 seats with 10 parties, allotting 41 to the DMDK, 12 to the Communist Party of India-Marxist, 10 to the Communist Party of India, two each to the PT and the SMK, three to the MNMK and one each to the Republican Party of India, the All India Forward Bloc, Kongu Youth Federation and the AIMMK.
With the announcement of its candidates, it is clear that AIADMK’s long time partner MDMK is out of the alliance.
