Agra, May 23 (IANS) Rama Shankar Katheria, the new MP from the city of the Taj Mahal, started his stint as a parliamentarian with a protest demonstration here Saturday against opening of a country-made liquor kiosk near several schools in the city.
The Agra university professor and a first time MP told party workers that he would spare no efforts to get people’s problems solved and would “personally lead such programmes that highlighted grievances against the governments in Lucknow and New Delhi”.
Katheria is a Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentarian.
The residents of the Mandi Sayeed Khan area had been agitating for more than a fortnight asking police to remove the liquor kiosk. “The administrative machinery has paid no heed,” said a former air force official, who was among the protesters.
Police and district administration officials reached the site and promised early action.
The kiosk was later closed down but residents threatened to relaunch the stir if it reopened.
