Panaji, May 7 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari Friday said Afzal Guru, the mastermind of the 2001 attack on parliament was “a son-in-law of the Congress”.
He said the party had no political will to hang Guru because he was a Muslim and hanging him would affect the party’s minority vote-bank.
Speaking at a public meeting here, Gadkari said he would be “surprised” if the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government ever hung 26/11 perpetrator Ajmal Kasab.
“Kasab is 50th on the waiting list. I will be surprised if he is hung. Look at Afzal Guru. He is the son-in-law of the Congress. Despite so many years after the Supreme court verdict, he is still not being hung.”
“Afzal is not being hung because it will affect the vote-bank of the Congress,” Gadkari said.
Gadkari also accused the Congress of appeasing terrorists in the name of secularism.
The BJP president said India was beset by security threats both from within the country in form of Maoism and from neighbouring countries.
“The UPA is unable to deal with the Kashmir crisis. China is encroaching on Indian territory. Bangladeshis are entering India by the lakhs. India needs a nationalist party like the BJP to rule at the centre,” said Gadkari, whose two-day visit to Goa concluded Friday.
