Sep 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Vincent C. Gray, a 67 year old veteran who spent most of his professional years marshaling not for profit organizations, beat fellow Democrat Adrian Fenty in the race for the Democrat nomination for the post of Mayor of Washington DC. With almost non existent Republican competition, Vincent C Gray, the incumbent Chairman of the District of Columbia Council is just a few months away from being elected as the Mayor of Washington DC.
Adrian Fenty was sworn in as the Mayor of Washington DC in 2006 with overwhelming support from both white as well as colored neighborhoods. However, this round of polling saw votes being polarized based on color. According to a poll conducted by Washington Post a couple of weeks prior to the nomination polls, Gray, an African American, led Adrian Fenty by 64% to 19% among colored democrats while Fenty was supported by 64% of white democrats as compared to 19% for Vincent Gray. This polling behavior was replicated in the actual polls where Fenty saw his popularity waning in black dominated neighborhoods but maintaining his lead in other white majority neighborhoods.
Adrian Fenty is considered by many to be a hard hitting, no nonsense mayor; much of this image was created when he bulldozed his way through to implement his Education Reforms where multiple schools were closed down and teachers and other staff were fired. Vincent Gray, on the other hand, positioned himself as a more conciliatory candidate who was willing to listen to the demands and requests of multiple stakeholders like the teachers, trade unions and other groups.
With Adrian Fenty firmly denying a write-in candidature, Vincent Gray is all poised to be the Mayor of Washington DC in the Nov polls at the ripe age of 67.
