Action at Ramdev meeting undemocratic: Naveen Patnaik

Bharatiya Janata Party Bhubaneswar, June 5 (IANS) Political parties, religious leaders and people in Orissa Sunday condemned the forceful eviction of Baba Ramdev from Delhi’s Ramlila Ground, terming it “shocking” and “shameful”.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik termed it “shocking, undemocratic and draconian”.

“The action taken late last (Saturday) night at Baba Ramdev’s peaceful meeting is truly shocking and draconian,” Patnaik here told reporters here. “The central government has behaved in the most undemocratic manner,” he said.

The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) described the action as brutal and said the party will organize state wide protests from Sunday evening.

“It was a brutal and shameful action on a peaceful meeting. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi must apologise to the people of the country for this barbaric act,” state BJP president Jual Oram said.

Meanwhile, supporters of Baba Ramdev, including women and children, staged protests and demonstrations in different parts of the state.

A large number of activists of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the rightwing Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) and Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM) took out a protest march in Bhubaneswar shouting slogans against the prime minister and the central government.

Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Puri, also condemned the incident and said the action was a blatant violation of human right, according to a statement from his office.
