Achuthanandan influencing judiciary: Kerala opposition
February 28th, 2011 - 11:15 pm ICT by IANSThiruvananthapuram, Feb 28 (IANS) The Congress-led opposition in Kerala Monday met Governor R.S.Gavai and demanded that action be taken against Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan for trying to influence the judiciary.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, at the governor’s official residence, Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy said that they had placed all the evidence before Gavai.
“It was very recently that P.Sasi, a senior party colleague of Achuthanandan, made it public that he tried to influence a judicial commission that probed the 2000 Kalluvathukal liquor tragedy that left 32 dead. Then again as chief minister, he (Achuthanandan) wrote a letter in 2007 to the apex court collegium recommending the name of then Kerala High Court chief justice V.K.Bali for a judge of the apex court,” he said.
Chandy also noted that it was the youth wing activists of Achuthanandan’s party who enacted a mock send-off for Bali when he retired, by dumping his effigy in the waters off Kochi, near the high court.
“For his party activists, Bali was unacceptable but for Achuthanandan, he was an acceptable person,” he added.
The war between the opposition and Achuthanandan has intensified ever since the latter has been reopening old cases against them.
Chandy was accompanied by all the top leaders of the opposition.
