9000 Public Sector Staff Found to be Earning More Than PM
September 20th, 2010 - 9:21 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonSep 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to a recent report from ‘BBC Panorama’, over nine thousand public servants in Britain are paid more than the Prime Minister. A “Freedom of Information Survey” brought it to the media’s attention that there were 38,000 employees in all, which male six figure salaries that are paid by tax payers. One thousand of those public servants make over £200,000, while the Prime Minister, David Cameron makes only £142,500, since he took a 5% pay cut when he took office.
The government has been issuing warnings that public spending has to be cut deeply or there will be serious consequences. According to these reports, the pay for the top 5% of public servant earnings has increased by 51% in the past decade. Among the top paid are GPs, teachers, policemen, and BBC executives.
But the unison general secretary,Dave Prentis feels that these reports are simply another attack on the public sector, stating, There will be many more in the private sector who earn much more than this. However, the majority of public sector workers will never get anywhere near these salaries. For example, two thirds of local government workers earn less than £21,000-a-year and are facing a three-year pay freeze. There should not be such a gap between those at the top and those at the bottom. The pay freeze will only make it worse.”
