Bhubaneswar, Nov 30 (IANS) About 72 percent voting was registered in the assembly by-poll in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district Wednesday, an official said.
“It was 72 percent voting,” district collector Sibabrata Dash said told IANS.
There were no reports of any untoward incident till late afternoon from any part of the constituency. District Superintendent of Police Niti Shekhar said the closing time for voting was 4 p.m., but the deadline was extended in many places as large number of people were waiting to cast their votes.
The by-election for the Umerkote assembly seat, reserved for Scheduled Tribes, was necessitated after the killing of Biju Janana Dal (BJD) member Jagabandhu Majhi by gunmen Sep 24.
The candidates who are testing their lucks include Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Dharmu Gond, Congress’s Jatindranath Gond and ruling BJD’s Subash Gond. The constituency has 1,65,037 eligible voters.
