2G case: Maran brothers quizzed by CBI (Lead)
September 14th, 2011 - 10:15 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) The CBI recently grilled former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother and media mogul Kalanithi Maran in connection with 2G spectrum allocation case and the Aircel-Maxis deal, an official said Wednesday.
“Both the brothers have been examined,” a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official said, but refused to divulge the dates.
Sources said Kalanithi, the managing director of the Rs.19 billion Sun TV group, was questioned Monday.
Dayanidhi Maran, who was the communications minister 2004-07 in the first United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, is accused of blocking for two years Aircel’s application for licence and spectrum.
He quit as textiles minister in July over his alleged role in the 2G spectrum scam.
Aircel promoter C. Sivasankaran had complained to the CBI that he was coerced into selling his firm to Malaysia-based Maxis, considered close to the Marans.
The CBI said that any “coercion” could not be established, but allegations of quid pro quo are being investigated.
Earlier, the agency had filed a preliminary enquiry report about irregularities related to the department of telecommunication (DoT) between 2001 and 2007. Dayanidhi Maran was in charge of the ministry from 2004 to 2007.
The CBI is also looking into financial transactions of Sun TV and Maxis.
