1,880 file nominations for Punjab polls

Chandigarh, Jan 12 (IANS) A total of 1,880 candidates have filed their nominations for the 117 seats of the Punjab assembly for which elections will be held Jan 30.
A spokesperson of the chief electoral officer’s (CEO) office said here Thursday evening that 1,880 nominations were received till Thursday evening.
Jan 12 was the last date for filing nominations.
A total of 900 nominations were filed on the last day (Jan 12). The nomination process had started Jan 6.
The main contest is between the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine and the opposition Congress. The Sanjha Morcha floated by the Peoples Party of Punjab (PPP), CPI, CPI-M and Akali Dal (Longowal) are projecting themselves as the third front in the state.
The counting of votes will take place March 6.
