World’s ‘most expensive’ tea is flavored with panda poo
January 10th, 2012 - 9:24 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattBeijing, Jan 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Panda is obviously sacred to the Chinese people but to one businessman, there is a whole lot reason why the animal is special. A 41-year-old professor grows tea leaves using panda droppings and is offering them at an unimaginable price.
An Yanshi offers a pound of his special tea for £22,000. To put it in the right perspective, the cost of the tea is almost 10,000 the cost of a normal tea. He gets his panda droppings from breeding centers in the Chinese province of Sichuan.
An is a university lecturer at the Sichuan University. According to him, the tea has health properties which make the cost worthwhile.
He explained that, “Pandas have a very poor digestive system and only absorb about 30 per cent of everything they eat. That means their excrement is rich in fibres and nutrients. Just like green tea, bamboo contains an element that can prevent cancer.”
The cost though is expected to drop after the first batch. An also has other driving motivation to come up with the tea. He revealed that he has his sight set on a recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records as having developed the world’s most expensive tea.
