Women’s breast riddled with metal by mistake
March 23rd, 2011 - 7:39 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Mar 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Researchers inadvertently left hundreds of tiny particles in the breasts of about thirty women who underwent breast cancer study. The particles were in a device used during surgery on the women.
The particles are visible on mammogram and they resemble calcium which can indicate the presence of cancer in the breast. This has negatively affected some of the women with at least one of the women indicating that she would want her whole breast severed off. The long term effect of the particles is not yet known and the device has since been recalled.
The manufacturers of the device called Axxent FlexiShield Mini have acknowledged the problem. Most of the procedures were carried on the women at the Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, California. The hospital officials have released a statement on the incident. The statement acknowledged the problem and indicated that about 11 of the women have undergone mammogram test with the results showing the metal particles in their breasts. Two of the affected women had their procedure at the Karmanos-Crittenton Cancer Center in Rochester Hills, Michigan where hospital officials said both women have been informed of the problem. The spokesman however said the two women have not yet returned to the hospital.
The metal in the breasts of the women have been identified as the heavy metal tungsten.
