Ukraine, Apr 28, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Yesterday Ukraine’s parliament saw some volatile actions as the angry opposition lawmakers threw bombs and smoke bombs in an attempt to stall a measure promoted by the ruling party. However, the measure got passed amidst the hullabaloo and according to the bill, the Russian navy would be allowed to stay in the waters of Ukraine for 32 years more.
The egg throwing became so rampant that Volodymyr Lytvyn, the parliament speaker had to open an umbrella to guard him from the eggs being thrown from every direction. The protesters shouted at the top of their voices. Outside the parliament thousands of irate civilians gathered as well. The country is going through a turmoil over an agreement signed by President Viktor Yanukovych and Russian president Dmitry Medvedev that allows the stay of the Russia’s Black Sea fleet at Crimea port. The opposition lawmakers are of the opinion that the treaty is against the constitution of the country.
Yulia Tymoshenko, the former prime minister and the leader of the opposition remarked that the signing of the treaty hurt the honor of the country and the constitution. Ukraine had hardly any choice as its economy is in doldrums. It will get gas imported from Russia at 30 percent reduced rate after this deal.
There was a commotion in the parliament and the proceedings almost came to a standstill. However, the ruling party still managed to get the motion passed with a majority of 230 votes out of 450. The lease of the fleet was slated to end in 2017 but later it was extended for 25 more years.
