dog August 7, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Gina, a bomb sniffer police dog has been suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder known as PTSD in short. She is now on the way to recovery and is making remarkable progress say the sources.

After spending almost five months in rehabilitation, her progress has been termed as ‘pretty fabulous’ by her handler Staff Sgt. Melinda Miller who is the Kennel master at the Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. The Master Sergeant Eric Haynes also says that her recovery has been outstanding.

She is now being re introduced to the noises of the war and is expected to return to her job once she recovers fully. She is a trained bomb sniffing German shepherd who had been taken to Iraq where she went from door to door searching for explosives. The noise all around her left her traumatized thereafter.

She was totally changed after she came back from her tour. The normally cheerful two year old Gina seemed frightened and cowered. She also resisted going into the buildings even when accompanied by her handlers. Her tail would remain perpetually between her legs as she cowered close the floor. She also chose to hide behind furniture and avoided people.

A veterinarian diagnosed her malady as PTSD.

Gina is well on the road to recovery now and has started enjoying life again. She is now engaged in searching for explosives in the cars found in Peterson and other nearby military areas. Her handlers hope that she will be able to work in war zones again but not immediately.

Nicholas Dodman who is the head of the animal behavior program at Tuft University’s school of Veterinary Medicine, says that Gina might not be able to forget all her fears completely. It is not possible to unlearn such experiences, But he hopes that she will be able to work after being re trained. “We do not give up on our dogs just because they are wounded,” says Dodman. “They are treated as our soldier partners”, he adds.
