The Little Doggy That Could: Stray Dog Hit Twice By Train

01 Apr 09 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A Utah choo choo was no match at all for a tiny ShihTzu who was hit not once but twice by the huge train. The eight pound dog dubbed “The Little Guy” is no bigger than a cat, and seems to have just as many lives.

Fred Krause who is a train operator for Utah Railways was operating the train on Sunday night when he first saw a cream colored spot of fur on the tracks near Kearns High School. He was unable to stop the train and passed right over the small little pooch. Krause had no way to know whether or not the dog had survived the incident. “I saw this little guy between the rail,” said Fred Krause, “and of course and it was too late to do anything about it.There’s nothing you can do,” Krause said. “It breaks your heart. But there’s nothing you can do.”

He had serious doubts about the dog surviving, and continued on his route. He continued his delivery to Kennecott, and started the trip to return to Midvale when to his surprise he saw the little cream colored furball again. The dog did not appear injured, but was playing chicken with the train! “I’m flashing the lights, blowing the horn, trying to get him out of the rails,” Krause said. “And he just ran right down the rails at us. I tried to slow down, got it from 20 miles per hour to 15 miles per hour when we hit, thought for sure we killed him.”

Krause, who has his own little ShihTzu dog named “Milo” who is seven years old, could not get the little doggy that could off his mind. He had to go back and see if the pooch had survived getting hit by the train as soon as he got off. “I took my flashlight and walked down the rails and saw a heap of fur and thought this is it,” Krause said. “I shined a light on him and he turned around and looked at me.” Krause took the dog to the local vet, and then took him home to recover.

“If he can get along with Milo we might keep him,” Krause said. “If we can find the original owners we’ll give him back. Or if not we’ll find a home.” The dog does not yet have a name, and although “Lucky” would seem an obvious choice, Krause says it is just too cliche’.
