Madrid, Oct 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Might be an unconventional championship but the first siesta competition was held in Spain. Unemployed security guard Pedro Soria Lopez won the championship and managed to bag the top prize of 1000 Euros as well.

The championship was held at the Spanish capital of Madrid with the intention of encouraging lunchtime nap in the country. Organizers and judges monitored the competitors as they take a 20-minute nap at a shopping mall.

To win the competition, you must be a really good sleeper who sleeps instantly because if you are able to do that and maintain your sleep throughout the 20 minutes, you will be rewarded the maximum 20,000 points.

Pulse monitors are used to check the sleeping state of the participants. The participants wear several outfits for the competition including pajamas and eye masks.

If you are a “lazy” sleeper, you might find yourself getting more points although you might not sleep for a long period. The judges give out extra points if you snore and sleep in “original” sleeping positions. National Association of Friends of the Siesta organizes it and the winner will be given 1,000 Euros for his/her effort.

An average of 50 people has taken part in the competition daily since it opened.
