Nov 10, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The head of Russia’s notorious prison, Butyrka, said that it was ready to improve the living conditions of the inmates with the help of some new facilities that included sunbeds. The head of the prison, Sergei Telyatnikov told the media on Tuesday that the prison was also considering several new medical facilities as well. He revealed that the sunbeds will be installed for medical purposes and he is expecting them to be installed by the end of the year. According to the prison head the inmates will also have access to ultrasound technologies to check up their health and might even have spa and mud-bath facilities in the future. Sergei Telyatnikov also said that the prisoners will also have access to Skype services that would allow them to communicate with their relatives and loved ones.
The move does not come as a surprise to the media which has often highlighted the awful living conditions in the 19th century prison. The prison has housed a number of notable figures in history that included author Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Adolf Hitler’s nephew Heinrich. The living conditions in the prison’s of Russia have come under heavy scrutiny from the media after the death of the 37 year old lawyer Sergei Magnitsky towards the end of last year.
The death of the lawyer caused a huge stir as it was alleged that in spite of repeated requests from the 37 year old was not provided with the necessary medical facilities. The Federal Prison Service had accepted partial responsibility for the death of Sergei Magnitsky. Earlier this year the prison service reported that more than half of the prisoners at the prison were ill with many suffering from HIV and even tuberculosis.
