Pole Vaulter’s pole snaps while jumping

Daegu, Aug 30 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A Russian pole vaulter had the mattress to thank when his pole snapped into two as he was trying to clear a jump. Dmitry Starodubtsev is representing Russia at the World Championships in Daegu. The incident ended the hopes o Russia in grabbing gold in the event.

Starodubtsev was riding well in the early stages of the event but the incident undoubtedly left him traumatized as he walked away. When the pole snapped, Starodubtsev could be seen coming down awkwardly. To his relief and the relief of several other people who were at the stadium and watching on TV around the world, he landed on the mat.

When the incident happened, Starodubtsev was trying to clear the hurdle at 5.75m. After the ordeal, Starodubtsev did not go ahead with the event again. He could be seen clutching his wrist in pain as he moved away from the mat.

Jan Kudlicka of Czech Republic suffered a similar fate when he tried to clear the same hurdle. The two incidents which happened just minutes from each other has got people asking some serious questions about the safety of the poles.

Pawel Wojciechowski from Poland took the gold when he cleared the hurdle at 5.90m.
