Nigerian Man Has 107 Wives
May 13th, 2011 - 7:45 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattAbuja, May 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A Nigerian man has called it a day after marrying 107 wives. The man, Bello Maasaba, is father to 185 children; the youngest of the children was born just a month ago.
The Los Angeles Times report says the man is currently living with only 86 of his wives after he divorced 12 of the women and buried nine others. Under the Islamic laws, a man is allowed to marry four women provided he can cater for them equally. Bello who is an Islamic faith healer says his decision to marry so many women is as a result of divine revelation from God.
The Times quoted the 87-year-old as saying, “I get a revelation from God telling me any woman I’m going to marry. If it wasn’t from God, I wouldn’t have gone beyond two.”
By marrying so many women, Bello has created a massive extended family for himself. Currently he has a total of 5,000 members in his extended family including nephews, in-laws, nieces, cousins and others.
Bello was thrown to jail about three years ago when the Islamic rulers in Nigeria became aware of the number of women that he has married. 57 of his wives were made to testify during the trial. All the women testified that they married Bello out of their own will. Bello was released from prison after that.
Bello lives in an 89-bedroom house with his family.
