Sep 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Japanese government have lost track of more than 230,000 people that are listed as 100 years old or above. It is believed that most of them are dead. The revelation is contained in a survey the government released on Friday.

The Justice Ministry in August ordered that the country’s record be reviewed. The country’s records showed that at least 77,000 people in the country were 120 years and above and a further 884 were 150 years and above.

The review revealed that about 234,354 of the centenarian population could not be found though records showed that they were still alive. Officials have subsequently ordered that notes of “unaccounted for” should be attached to the names of those that could not be traced.

An official of the Justice Ministry who spoke to the press on the condition of anonymity said most of those unaccounted for are either dead, traveled outside or lost touch with the family members. Police discovered in late July that the man who was thought to be Tokyo’s oldest man at the age of 111 had been dead since the last 32 years. They retrieved his decayed body after the discovery and arrested his granddaughter for abandonment and pension fraud.

Japan’s population is fast aging and the population of people who are 65 or older reached a record 22.7 percent last year.

Japan has the highest life expectancy for women in the world. Women in Japan averagely live up to 86 years and men are expected to live for 80 years.
