Man arrested for trying to smuggle 50 snakes on a plane
November 17th, 2011 - 1:04 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattStockholm, Nov 16 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A man was arrested for trying to smuggle about 50 snakes on board a flight. The authorities at the Stockholm Arlanda Airport detected the unusual “goods” in the luggage of the man when he got to Sweden from China. At least two of the snakes were dead when the animals were found.
The 28-year-old man is said to be a snake breeder. Upon inspection, the authorities realized that the man had three Chinese snakes, 41 scorpions and five vipers. All the animals were placed in plastic containers before being put in the luggage. The packages were marked ‘Toys’ when they were found. The Chinese officials failed to detect the concealment allowing the man to get the animals to Sweden.
During interrogation, the man reportedly told the officials that the animals were gifts that he received from someone. Trying to smuggle wild creatures across borders without license is against international laws.
The man was sentenced to 60 hours of community service for what he did.
People try to smuggle all manners of creatures on planes. Earlier in the year, two men from Indonesia were caught in Dubai when they tried to smuggle 40 pythons to the country. All the animals were sedated.
