Liam Wood dies after celebrating football goal
January 9th, 2012 - 10:07 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Jan 9 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A 13-year-old schoolboy died just moments after scoring a goal in a football match. Liam Wood had celebrated scoring a goal in front of his family when he collapsed just moments later. He was placed in the ambulance and rushed to the hospital.
Doctors declared him dead shortly after reaching the hospital. Liam and his teammates at AFC Saints were playing against the Stafford Falcons when the incident happened. The Daily Mail reports that shortly after he scored the goal, Liam ran to his grandmother and father where he celebrated the goal. Moments later, he collapsed on the pitch. His goal was the fifth for AFC who had taken a commanding.
Club manager Mark Lawton paid tribute to Liam. He joined several other mourners to pay tribute to Liam on Monday. He said that, “Liam went to school with my son Joseph. Every time he came to training he would get the balls out and couldn’t wait to play. You couldn’t meet a nicer lad. He was an athletic kid, short, but he could run.”
The incident happened on Sunday at AFC’s playing field. Facebook page has been opened in honor of Liam where tributes has been pouring in. Several of his friends continued to pay tribute on the page.
