Laptop Thief Mails Victim His Data On a USB Stick
October 19th, 2010 - 2:33 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonOct 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A Swedish professor is relieved and happy, despite the fact that his laptop was recently stolen, and has not been returned, nor has the thief been caught. What would make him so happy in the face of losing all his computer, and most likely important work?
The anonymous professor from Umeå University in northern Sweden is considered to be one of the most successful in his field, according to the Västerbottens-Kuriren newspaper. He had recently suffered surgery and was feeling exhausted on his return home from work. He left his backpack, which held his laptop, keys, calendar, and other documents inside as he went downstairs from his apartment to do laundry, instead of making to the climb to drop the backpack off in his room first.
When he came back, the bag was gone, much to his devastation. He was mostly upset about losing his calendar, and stated, “It is my life. I have documented everything in it that has happened in the last 10 years and beyond.”
He went to call the police, and to stop all his credit cards. However, when he returned downstairs, he was shocked at what he saw, “The backpack was there again. With all the papers, calendar and credit cards. It was just the computer that was missing. Unfortunately, I have been bad at backing up my computer.”
He was resigned that he had lost his laptop, but happy that the thief was at least thoughtful enough to return his other belongings. But much to his delight, a week later, he received an envelope which contained a USB stick. When he inserted the stick into his new laptop, he found that the thief had spent hours backing up all of his information, and sent it to him.
He hopes that this story will encourage other thieves to be as compassionate. “Often when people lose their computers and cameras, it is understandably not the gadget itself that is the most important. The content is often irreplaceable,” he explained.
