george New York, Apr 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A New York library has claimed that the first President of the United States George Washington didn’t return 2 books that he took around 2 centuries ago. So George Washington owes around $300,000 in library fines.

According to reports, the first US President George Washington visited the New York Society Library on the 5th October 1789, and he took 2 books from there - international relations treatise “Law of Nations” and Vol. 12 of the British Parliament transcript series “Commons Debates.” The due date for the books was the 2nd of November 1789, but they were never returned to the library. The late fees for the books were in the range of a few pennies per day. Since the last 2 centuries, the books have been accumulating the late fees and now they have amounted to a whopping $300,000.

The head librarian of the New York Society Library – Mark Bartlett said that they don’t want any late fees at all, but they would be happy and relieved if the books were returned at least now, after a couple of centuries. “We’re not actively pursuing the overdue fines. But we would be very happy if we were able to get the books back,” according to the head librarian Mark Bartlett.
