San Luis Obispo County, April 1 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A woman compounded her case when she presented a phony doctor’s note when she was about to be sentenced for forging fake prescriptions. The court had earlier granted her $45,000 after she pleaded no contest to the charge of felony forgery and using a fraudulent check.

41-year-old Michelle Astumian was due to be sentenced but she presented a doctor’s note that she claimed was from her doctor urging the judge to postpone the sentencing. When the court phoned the doctor to ascertain the authenticity of the note, it turned out that Astumian had faked that one as well.

The revelation incensed the judge who immediately ordered Astumian into custody. Before Astumian could be taken to custody, she collapsed to the court floor and paramedics rushed to take her in an ambulance. She was sent to the hospital where she is expected to recover.

The court in San Luis Obispo County is expected to sentence Astumian once she is out of the hospital. The incident happened on Monday and the San Luis Obispo County Tribune quoted the prosecutor, Dave Pomeroy, as saying that Astumian would be sentenced although he did not know when.

Astumian could be jailed for five years for the previous charges.
