640_surgery_397x224 September 18, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): 47-year-old hairdresser Ingrid Paulicivic has recently filed a lawsuit against Gynecologist Dr. Red Alinsod because the doctor used a laser device to brand her name on her Uterus. Ingrid went through a Hysterectomy last year under the supervision of Dr. Red Alinsod. After removing the patient’s uterus, the doctor used an electrocautery device to etch the name of the patient on her uterus. The doctor chose to call it a ‘friendly gesture’ but did not inform the patient about the so called gesture at that time.

Paulicivic alleges that the branding was completely unnecessary and termed it as an “inexcusable and bizarre behavior”. The patient has filed the lawsuit under the account of medical negligence and Dr. Red Alinsod might have his professional license revoked if he is found guilty. The patient claims that she had suffered burns on her legs while the uterus was being branded. The doctor sued for carving name on organ seemed quite nonchalant about the incident.

In a recent interview, Alinsod said that Paulcivic’s hysterectomy was uneventful and he branded the uterus only because the patient was his “good-friend”. Commenting on Dr. Alinsod’s remark, Paulcivic’s lawyer said that his client has never met the doctor before 2009.

Paulicivic and her husband Joe learned about the branding during a follow-up visit with Dr. Alinsod. During the follow-up exam, Paulicivic complained about burns on her legs and the couple asked for photographs of the operation. The gynecologist provided the couple with 50 digital images of which one showed the doctor branding the organ. Another photograph shows the doctor holding up the Uterus with the branding on it.

Dr. Red Alinsod has had a distinguished career so far and he has worked with the U.S. military in the past as well. Paulcivic’s lawsuit includes her husband as a plaintiff and it claims that she has been ‘permanently injured and damaged’.
