Deer knocks over cross country runner Anna Phelan

Toronto, Oct 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A ten-year-old cross-country runner was knocked down by an obviously scared deer.

The girl - Anna Phelan was among hundreds of elementary school children that had taken part in the cross-country exercise at the Meaford military training center, which is some 180km northwest of Toronto.

The incident left the mark of the animal’s hoof on the shoulder of the young girl.

Anna told reporters that she was walking with her friend, Molly Zettler when the incident happened. She said they heard screaming and suddenly the deer jumped over them catching Anna on the shoulder.

Anna said she felt pains in her shoulder after the incident. She explained that before the animal caught her, she tried to duck but it seems the incident happened way faster than her reaction.

The school children were singing through the bush during the even and that might have startled the animal.

Anna’s friend, Molly said after the incident that she was shocked and scared when she saw the deer approach them. However she also did not escape the deer’s hit. She said the animal caught her on her temple resulting in her falling hurting her knee in the process.

Some 1,300 school children took part of the cross country exercise and Anna and Molly completed the race nonetheless.
