Deceased candidate wins mayor’s election in Michigan

Michigan, Nov 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Voters in Michigan prefers a dead mayor over an untested politician! With just a week to the mayoral election in the city, Mayor Henry Roesler Jr. passed away. His name was left on the ballot during the election because of the obvious reason of not spending money to print new ballots.

When the results were compiled, Roesler came up tops with 129 votes. Of course he couldn’t be declared the winner because the state laws say votes for a dead person should be considered void.

That leaves the second placed candidate, Kevin Erb, as the next mayor of Michigan. Erb, who contested and lost to Roesler in 2009, polled 115 of the valid votes. He will serve for two years before facing another election.

It is not clear why majority of the voters in the city chose to re-elect Roesler as the mayor when he had passed away. It was clear that the votes wouldn’t account to anything because the state law on elections is very clear on such situations.

The law states that “Any votes cast for a deceased candidate are void and shall not be counted.”

If the officers at the polling center had followed the law to the latter, they will not have counted the ballots.
