China might force visits to parents
February 3rd, 2011 - 2:28 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattBeijing, Feb 2 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Chinese authorities are proposing that parents should be allowed to sue their adult-children who refuse to visit them.
The proposal was made by the Civil Affairs Ministry on Monday. The country’s State Council will have the final say when the proposal is brought before it. If the proposed law is passed, children will be forced to pay their aged parents more visits to avoid being sued.
Some critics of the proposed law hopes that the State Council with throw the proposal away instead of accepting it.
The law seeks to amend a 1996 law that spells out the rights of the aged.
A lover of the proposal, Ninie Wang who is the international director of the Gerontological Society of China said that, “I know the person who drafted this provision, and the first thing I told him was ‘Really nice move. The whole society needs to start seeing that we need to give the elderly more care and attention.”
The Chinese population is widely aging. The country which is the world’s populous nation also has one of the highest life expectancy rates in the world. The country currently has the highest number of over 100-year-olds in the world.
