Cat Ordered to do Jury Service in Boston
January 19th, 2011 - 1:28 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonJan 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Although it is a very odd occurrence, a cat in Boston has been ordered to appear for jury duty, despite the fact that the court has been informed that “Tabby Sal” is indeed a cat.
Although a website for the United States judicial system says that in order to be a juror, the participant is “not expected to speak and understand perfect English”, one would still suspect that a cat, or an animal of any kind, would have problems deciding a defendant’s guilt or innocence.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the owners of the cat, Anna and Guy Esposito wrote a letter to the Suffolk County Crown Court in Boston and explained that Tabby Sal was a feline, but a court jury commissioner simply explained that the cat “must attend” jury duty on March 23. They even tried sending a note form the vet, which verified that Tabby Sal was indeed “a domestic short-haired neutered feline,” but to no avail.
When the Espositos had filled out their last census report, they had listed Tabby Sal in the section under “pets”. Anna feels that this is likely where the mix up occurred, but her husband, Guy thinks it is all a little ridiculous, and states, “I said, ‘Sal, what’s this?’ I was shocked. He likes to sit on my knee and watch crime shows with me but even so he’s still under-qualified for jury duty if you ask me.”
