Andre & Korisha Shipley sue morgue for keeping their dead son’s brain with them
October 28th, 2010 - 8:27 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Oct 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) When Jesse Shipley was buried in 2005 after he died from a car crash, his parents had no idea that his brain had been removed.
However 5 years later, the friends of the 17-year-old who were visiting the morgue where his body was kept, realized to their horror that his brain had been removed and kept in a jar by the morgue authorities.
The revelation did upset the fellow students, including Jesse’s girlfriend that they began crying and shaking. They were able to identify that the brain belonged to Jesse because the jar that contained his suspended brain had his name written on it.
Even Jesse’s parents are upset no end. Andre Shipley and Korisha Shipley have sued the morgue for their action. An appeal court upheld the case and refused to dismiss it.
The morgue has returned the brain to the family after the revelation and Jesse’s body was reentered to make sure his brain was part of the buried body.
The family claims that the morgue did not have the right to remove the organ without the family’s permission. The morgue is reportedly weighing its chances in this legal battle.
