May 4 (THAINDIAN NEWS) I know, the headline to this article makes it sound quite unusual and possibly controversial, however, the story is actually quite beautiful. You see, 90 year old Hasselteen Rumbo never got to attend her prom. Since her mother and father did not dance, and her late husband didn’t either, she never had the chance to attend. Now, although she doesn’t really dance either she is ready to go to what is usually known as a teenage rite of passage.

Rumbo, who lives in Independance Missouri has agreed to her great grandson’s proposal to attend his high school prom with him. In answer to Ron Blalock’s idea, his great grandmother replied, “Why not? I’m ready!” According to Bev Chapman from KMBC news, she looks ready. Rumbo has a black sequin dress which was donated by a local Methodist church. Her corsage has been ordered, and although she even tried on 6 inch heels, she has decided not to wear them.

The 90 year old is a resident of Independence Manor Care Center. This is not the lady’s ‘first’ of the year either. The activities director at her care facility, Tracy Bunch, recently arranged for Rumbo to attend her first concert. Bunch managed to get sixth row seat and a backstage pass for Rumbo to meet “Reba McEntire” (pictured). Rumbo got to ride to the concert in a limo. She stated that the concert was fun, but the music was a bit loud.

Rumbo is all ready to try new things. “When I turned 90, everything just exploded. I’ve never been to a prom, and it’s awful,” she said. So she will be driven by her daughter to the prom date with her great grandson at the Arrowhead Pavilion. The 18 year old is a senior at Fort Osage. Ron Blalock actually has two dates since he suspects that his grandmother will go home early. They will most likely get their pictures taken so that Rumbo can have it added to the ‘Bucket List’ display in her care center’s hallway. She says that is really all she wants, just to “see and be seen, and I want to see what’s going on.”
