November 3, 2010 (Pen Men At Work): A ten year old child in Spain has given birth to her first baby! Confirming the news to the media was the social affairs minister of Jerez de la Frontera, a city located in southern Spain. And though having sex before attaining the age of 13 is a criminal offence in Spain, police officials investigating the incident are prepared to set aside this case as an exception. The question is whether the 10 year old will be allowed custody of her newborn.

Police officers have reported that both the baby and her child mother are in good health, but no further information regarding the pregnancy details of the 10 year old or the sex of the newborn was shared with the media. The Spanish Justice Ministry says that since the 10 year old’s partner was also a minor, further investigations will be held before a conclusion can be drawn in the case. However no criminal complaint has been lodged against the minor boy who slept with the 10 year old and medical reports confirm the fact that it was not an act of rape which led to the pregnancy.

The Spanish media reports that the 10 year old child is originally from Romania and was supposedly carrying her child when she first set foot on Spanish soil. Therefore officials are also not sure about the origins of her partner. While premature pregnancy may lead to unhealthy babies, the newborn is reportedly perfectly fine.
