Swine flu: Death toll rises to 76
August 25th, 2009 - 7:03 pm ICT by IBNSNew Delhi/Bangalore, Aug 25 (IBNS) With two people dying of the deadly H1N1 virus in Delhi and Bangalore respectively, the death toll in swine flu in India rose to 76 on Tuesday.
The recent victims of the viral disease are 44-year-old Usha Jain from Faridabad, about 25 km from Delhi and 28-year-old Bangalore-resident Siddarraju.
“Jain’s condition was very critical from day one of her admission to the hospital on Friday. She had suffered three cardiac arrests and her BP could not be maintained at the normal level despite medication. She died Tuesday morning,” said Medical Superintendent of RML Hospital NK Chaturvedi.
“She had not taken any medication even after eight days of showing the symptoms. She went to a private hospital for medication and that too in the last minute when her condition had worsened,” the superintendent said.
On the other hand, Siddarraju, who died at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases on Friday in Bangalore, also tested positive for chikungunya, said hospital authorities.
He was hospitalized on Friday.
As many as 137 fresh cases of swine flu were reported from various states since Sunday evening taking the total number of those afflicted by the virus to 2,909, Union Health Ministry officials said in Delhi.
