Five students were killed in a recent stampede at a Delhi school. This incident took place in a state-run school in the Khajurao Khas area. Among others twenty four students got severely injured when a group of girls running down a narrow staircase collided with a group of boys going up the stairs. The Delhi police officials confirmed the reason behind this fatal incident.

A police officer at Khajurao Khas police station was quoted saying “About 40 children were being moved from one section of the school to another.” Many more reasons are coming to the forefront which lead to the stampede. The school was waterlogged due to heavy rain in Delhi. This had further ignited rumors about a possible short-circuit due to electric current entering the stagnant water. The state authority has ordered for a thorough investigation of the incident.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit expressed concern over the incident by visiting the injured children at the Guru Teg Bahadur hospital. The medical superintendent of the hospital, OP Kalra declared five of the injured students as critical.

Mr Kalra further confirmed the incident taking place in the staircase. He said that the sudden need for evacuation while the girls were writing an exam lead to the stampede. There were 1,300 to 1,400 students present in the school at that time, between the age of eight to sixteen years.

This incident has invited angry outbursts among the parents and relatives of the students blaming the inefficient number of teachers present to guide the students while evacuating the rooms. The school now remains guarded by the Delhi police. A huge crowd of concerned parents and relatives are also found around the school area.
