ssssssJan 12, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Ohio State University researchers have come up with a new study, which says that the young generation crave for self-esteem more than sex. The researchers say that for young people, affirmation, praise and recognition are more important than money or sex. The lead researcher of the survey, Brad Bushman is of the opinion that the American society now believes “self-esteem” to be the remedy for all the social ills and it can be the cure every problem like violence, teen pregnancy or even bad grades.

Brad Bushman along with Jennifer Crocker and Scott Moeller surveyed about 130 University of Michigan students. In their survey, they asked the students to rate and rank their preferable choices from various options which included seeing a friend, taking part in an enjoyable activity, having sex, receiving money, drinking alcohol, receiving boost in self-esteem, to name a few. The researchers, in the press release said that most of the students chose self-esteem over all other activities. However, a reputed media outlet reported that the preference differed from female and male students as he latter ranked self-esteem above everything and females gave importance to friendship and money along with their self- esteem.

On the other hand, Brad Bushman said that though self-esteem has been chosen as the cure for everything, there is still no proof the self-esteem boost actually helps students to cope up with the other pressures. The study of the researchers has been published in “Journal of Personality” and the netizens can read them on web. Scott Moeller, of Brookhaven National Laboratory, who was also a co-author of the research said that the distinction between “liking-wanting” has played an important role in their research.
